Much has already been said and written about the infiltration of robotic process automation (RPA) and intelligent automation (IA) technologies into the workforce. In truth, it’s taken the corporate world a while to test, trust and commit to automation at work. To understand how far APAC/ANZ markets have advanced towards acting on these opportunities, the Shared Services and Outsourcing Network (SSON) surveyed the market and found that across the region corporations were forward thinking in building for scale, trusting technology and recognising the need to incorporate robotics into both IT infrastructure and enterprise strategy. This report explains how enterprises across APAC/ANZ are staying ahead of the global wave of RPA, the most popular solutions they are choosing, who the preferred consultants or 'integrators' are, the challenges, and how the digital workforce is being integrated into the human one.

he pursuits to reduce costs and avoid unplanned downtime remain primary operational goals in industrial plants. A convergence of factors has created an opportunity for industrial organizations such as manufacturing, oil and gas, chemicals and water treatment companies to aggressively pursue both. Although the pace of investment can be relatively slow in industrial automation (IA), technological advances, economic trends and market pressures have created an environment in which plants are compelled to modernize operational technology (OT) in order to ensure maximum efficiency and minimum process interruptions. Simply put, OT is getting old. The industrial sector is heavily capital-intensive and traditionally utilizes equipment with long lifecycles. Organizations with such outdated automation systems are in dire need of OT modernization to keep up with the pace of change, customer demands and business priorities, and reduce the risk of critical failures and costly downtime. Typically, Shared Services Center (SSCs) automation initiatives have been undertaken to reduce costs and improve efficiency. These goals are achieved relatively easily within the first few years, most immediately through reduced labor costs and centralized activities. In fact, standardization and centralization deliver up to 50% savings. During subsequent phases, technology automation and outsourcing cut costs further. But, if cost reduction is the only clearly defined goal, organizations will reach a point of diminishing returns.

Digital transformation will fail without a commitment to automation - what AHEAD refers to as Relentless Automation. With the advent of public cloud and all of its promise, along with the ripple effect from the DevOps mantra of “automate everywhere”, technology teams must spin up new infrastructure, maintain configurations, and set up and tear down environments much faster than ever before. Of course, no one should automate for the sake of automating, or to simply be ahead of the curve. But while not every activity warrants automation - whether due to the complexity and nuance of the task, or its infrequent occurrence - Relentless Automation means identifying those tasks and processes where the benefits of automation outweigh both its upfront and recurring costs. Thankfully, the business benefits of standardizing and automating IT work are easy to spot: > Freeing up staff for higher value work > Reduction in errors and process variability > More auditability and accountability, helping

We all know that employee engagement is important. Employees that are aligned with their goals, aware of their performance gaps, and motivated to improve, perform better. It’s stating the obvious. The big question is how to get there, and whether technology can help us do this at scale. This is where most digital motivation initiatives hit a wall. A new breed of next generation performance and feedback systems are attempting to do just that: creating and maintaining a continuous personalized conversation between employees and managers with regards to performance, development and goals. In online marketing, personalizing messages and promotional activities has been possible for some time. It is called “Marketing Automation”. Hubspot, one of the pioneers in this field, defines it thus: “software that exists with the goal of automating marketing actions. Many marketing departments have to automate repetitive tasks such as emails, social media, and other website actions. The technology of

Robotic process automation describes the use of technology to automate tasks that are traditionally done by a human being. The technology itself mimics an end user by simulating user actions such as navigating within an application or entering data into forms according to a set of rules. RPA is often used to automate routine administrative tasks that typically require a human being to interact with multiple systems, but RPA technology is evolving to support the automation of increasingly sophisticated processes at scale within enterprise architectures rather than on the desktop. Over the past two years, RPA has been adopted by a number of business process outsourcing (BPO) providers and a growing number of end-user organizations are now deploying the technology themselves to create “virtual workforces” of robotic workers.
